Powell Peralta – Public Domain, Rubber Boys Part (1988)

Public Domain was one of the first videos I saw right as it came out and pushed my desire to get my skills somewhere near the same level of skating that was shown in the video. The Rubber Boys section with Ray Barbee, Steve Saiz and Chet Thomas became the most memorable part because of the “Weakness” song by McRad.

Mike Vallely – Speed Freaks (1989)

Mike V was at the height of his influence and pairing his progressive skating with “Freak Scene” by Dinosaur Jr etched this part into my brain forever.

Planet Earth – Now ’n Later, Brian Lotti (1991)

Lotti had the unique gift to make highly technical skating look really good. Top it off with an underground classic such as “Not The Same” by Handy With Shovels to make a video part that stands out 30 years later.

Plan B – Questionable, Mini Ramp Section (1991)

We built our first indoor miniramp in the summer of 1990 and spent an absurd amount of time there, learning tricks day and night, old school, new school it didn’t matter. Fast forward to 1991 and the Questionable Video by Plan B and a miniramp section that showed us how far ahead those guys were with powerful technical progression. The skating was a perfect match to the energetic “College Volume Pedal” by Olivelawn.

Plan B – Questionable, Danny Way (1991)

From flatground tricks to vert and everything in between, I have always been into all terrain skating, so how could I not include Danny Way in the list of video parts that had a profound impact on me. After this part, Bad Religion became a permanent guest in my CD player for a few years.

Digging out these parts was like jumping in a car and taking a roadtrip down memory lane. And everybody knows that the soundtrack is a key part of any roadtrip. Of course the skating had a huge influence on me, but most of the songs that were used in the parts I picked were so dear to me that they still have a spot in many of my playlists about 30 years later in 2021.
