Mark Frölich has quite a history with overly long and overly gnarly video parts, but this one’s a special one. Here’s a modern day full length of a part by one of Europe’s most productive moshers ever, with guest appearances by Tom Penny and Flo Marfaing among others. Supported by Good Manners Skateboards. Below you’ll find a little interview with Mark, one question for every minute of gnar, 18 in total…
1) Where were you 18 years ago?
18 years ago, I was still in Wuppertal, skating all the Ruhrpott spots and getting ready for my departure to Barcelona on December 01, 2006… good times, actually.
2) How old are you now and how long have you been skating?
I m 38 thousand years young and I have been skating for 27 thousand years ;)
3) How many parts have you had throughout your career?
I have absolutely no idea (laughs). It doesn’t matter, though… I’m still into it. That’s what matters the most.
4) If you had to choose one, which one’s your favourite part, and why?
Damn … that’s a tough one to answer. I’ve actually thought about this question for quite a bit. I wanna say that I’m pretty happy with PULSE – it’s been a special feeling to finally get this one done. I’ve had three surgeries in the process and two of them were knee surgeries … lots of ups and downs… I’ve had a lot of time to think about stuff and I guess I’m quite happy with how it turned out. Besides, Brainstorm, One for the Homies and One for Nizar were pretty special to me, too. But then again, we’re talking video parts … they all hold a special place in my heart. It’s just too hard to pin it down to one (laughs).

5) Best rail you’ve ever skated?
Also not an easy one to answer. I’ve been fortunate enough to skate many nice ones. But as for now, I’ll mention this rail up in Sant Just, in suburbian Barcelona. Sadly, it’s been nobbed for quite a while already. But I’ll always remember the good sessions I’ve had there and I even finished my Till Your Legs Fall Off part there ..
6) Worst rail you’ve ever skated?
There are quite a lot of sketchy, shitty rails that I’ve skated (laughs). I still kinda like them, though. In the end, most of them were pretty nice to me. But only because I’ve passed by this one rail two days ago, I’ll go for the one I frontside boardslid in One for the Homies… pure crust (laughs).
7) If you had to choose between never wearing button up shirts again or only skating in shorts, what would it be?
That’s an easy one. I’d trade button up shirt for a black t-shirt and I’m good to go. I don’t think there’s a single clip of me wearing shorts. It’s not even that I dont like how it feels – I go skate in shorts sometimes. But when it comes to filming and the look, I prefer pants (laughs).
8) You’ve launched Good Manners Skateboards about half a year ago. What does the brand mean to you?
Good Manners just had to be… I’m stoked that we’re able to contribute something different, something individual to skateboarding. I’ve launched it with Philipp (Brenscheidt), and I’m looking forward to what’s coming next – it’s exciting, man! I’m grateful for the positive feedback we’ve gotten so far and more than stoked that people seem to feel the vibe.

9) How long have you been working on PULSE? Your Good Manners part came out in March, don’t tell us you’ve staked 18 minutes of footage in just a couple of months…
Haha, no. I don’t think that would even be possible, at least not for me. I’ve been holding stuff back for a quite bit. I wanted to work on it in peace and calm. No pressure is beneficial for me at this point in time. Also, I’ve had those injuries and surgeries. Obviously, that didn’t help to get things done. So, I started filming for PULSE in the beginning of 2022, coming off a surgery and then, had two more in the process. It’s been a wild ride.
10) The part’s basically a modern day full length. What was the idea behind putting such a gnarly amount of footage into one single project?
I guess, my idea was to try and make this one as complete of a part as I could, you know?! Skate all type of spots and do many different tricks – kinda like a full portrait of my skating. I wanted to show everyone that there’s always a way to make things happen, even if the conditions might not always be perfect. But as long as you are inspired and as long as your heart beats for skateboarding, you will always find a way. Also, I don’t really wanna put out stuff on instagram every second day or so. I prefer to take my time and I only wanna put something out, when I really feel it’s ready to be put out. I have done a video part or two in my life (laughs). I’m just used to it, but I also always try to make each and every one feel a bit different from the ones before. I have this drive, I wanna feel progress and I need a reason to keep giving my best out in the streets. PULSE definitely has been and is very special to me.

11) Favourite trick(s) from your new part?
The ender’s definitely one of them. I like how it looks, it felt amazing and I actually got pretty lucky on this one, too. It didn’t even take that long (laughs). Then, there’s the gap to backside 5-0 on the red kink rail. It was the first trick of a very nice day of skating in Santo Andre. Shoutout to Xico and the gang down there! They’ve been super welcoming and showed us around. The backside 5-0, the frontside nosegrind revert and frontside noseslide bigspin on this low to high, as well as the backward nosegrind down this hubba all happened in one day… a very nice day, indeed, and some very nice memories.
12) Tom Penny and Flo Marfaing got guest clips in PULSE. Could you give us some good Tom and Flo stories?
I’m just so stoked to have those guys in there. It’s amazing to see how much love for skateboarding they still have in them. Been there, done it all… but still out in the streets and loving it like there’s no tomorrow. It’s inspiring – it really is! I guess our session at Forum is a perfect example… just look at the level of stoke on Tom’s face when he rolls away from the nollie backside flip; look at their hug after Flo’s nollie half halfcab heelflip; look at them celebrating once I’ve gotten my trick, too. That’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?!
13) Main source(s) of inspiration when it comes to skating, then and now?
Oh, so many… The SORRY era definitely had a strong impact on me. But I guess then and now, there’s nothing quite like a good group of friends that all love skateboarding and push each other. That’s what makes the most magical sessions and that’s what has always inspired me the most.
14) Fuck, marry, kill: backside 180° nosegrind, frontside noseslide, halfcab crooks revert?
Haha, I cannot really answer that. I mean, there’s also backside flips, backside overcrooks and noseblunts, frontside boardslides, backside heelflips, backside 5050s … I wouldn’t wanna kill any of my tricks. Cherish what you got!

15) What’s the secret to jumping down stuff into your late 30s?
Again, cherish what you do, protect your skateboarding from unnecessary outside disturbances, take time to think, live a healthy life, eat well, sleep well, work out and stretch, ride the bike, go into the sea all year long and just don’t ever stop (laughs). Guess, I wanna quote Appleyard here, too: „With time, one has to become a bit more selective with them stunts.“
16) What does “Atat” mean? We’ve been seeing it all over previous comment sections…
„Atat“ goes way back… 2007, early Barcelona days. I think, we started using it when someone just talked too much. We would kinda just turn that person off by „atating“ over him or her. It somehow really caught up with everyone, though and became something more positive over the years. You can use „Atat“ in many different forms and ways, these days (laughs).
17) What’s the future holding in store for Good Manners Skateboards?
First of all, there’s our new drop coming out together with this part. I’m super stoked on that. We did collaboration with Julien Deniau and I think we’re all very happy with how it turned out… Check it out here! Some more products are already in the pipeline and regarding the team, there’ll be some additions coming up very soon. A few surprises here and there, a lot of things in the making. Stay tuned!
18) Where do you see yourself in 18 years from now? Still “moshing it down“?
Since we can’t really plan our life anyways I’ll leave this one up to the universe. I definitely want to skate for as long as I can, though. And I wanna enjoy every part of the journey! But till then, I wanna thank everyone who’s been a part of my journey so far. Thanks to you guys for the interview, for every photo of mine that you’ve printed in the mag and for hosting PULSE. Thanks to all the filmers, thanks to everyone who’s ever welcomed me at their place, thanks to all the homies and thanks to my lady Joana! Actually, she has put an insane amount of work into PULSE as well – she has probably filmed around 60% or 70% of the part! Muito obrigado amore meu – can’t thank you enough! I also wanna thank my sponsors for all their support: Good Manners, Lousy Livin, Plan B Skate Shop, Urban Supplies, Mob Grip and Ricta Wheels. Muchas gracias!
