“Everything starts with an ollie.“ – Does it really, though? I mean, don’t get me wrong, most things in skateboarding do start with an ollie: shove-its, kickflips, heelflips, … The list goes on and on. But there’s also an alternative route you can take, one where you don’t have to flip your board onto that rail. If you just got into skateboarding and you’re still learning how to pop your board properly, it’s the most normal thing on earth to miss the right moment here and there. But you might still end up riding onto that curb somehow – your first step on this alternative route, that will ultimately lead you to the simplistic essence of what skateboarding is all about.

What if less was more sometimes? What if a slappy crooks made you feel better than a kickflip backside tailslide? Don’t get me wrong, I mean, progression is important. But you’re the only one to choose the direction of your very own progression. Personally, I got to discover this alternative route of skateboarding in-between three consecutive ankle surgeries. But obviously, you don’t need to lose your ability to jump and take impact to fall in love with slappy grinds.Every one of us is in a different state of their own skateboarding journey and as long as you’re having fun, you’re doing it right! I know it’s all a matter of perspective, and I don’t want to hate too much, but these days, I couldn’t care less if someone’s doing the gnarliest tricks in history, selling their soul to a brand, or skating some big contests. I want to see people having fun without expectations. I want to see people skating what they want to skate without being judged and yes, sometimes without even popping their board.

And this is the vibe I’ve experienced so far, on my recent skateboarding journey, during all these sessions I’ve had with everyone who’s down to slap. The fun factor, the feeling of a long boardslide, the purity and ease (to a certain degree) of a session with your friends, … I mean, come on, that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?

And again, don’t get me wrong, of course there are different planets of tricks in my skateboarding universe that I still like to visit. But currently, I just really like to hang out on Planet Slappy, and I’d recommend to anyone reading this that they take this alternative route at least once and pay a visit to that beautiful planet full of curbs!
