Let’s be honest here, the life expectancy of most journals and magazines isn’t very long. They are thrown away, collect dust on some store shelves or slowly decompose somewhere in a restroom. Or do you still have your first skate magazine? Your first comic or teen magazine? Often a print product doesn’t even survive a single day. A daily newspaper, for example, is bought at a newsstand, and before the day’s done, it ends up in a bin somewhere. But hey, even though the energy input’s massive, we can use old paper to produce new paper. They call it upcycling, and even though it’s massive, the energy input for print might still be lower than the one for online media. After all, for the latter, there’s servers running for years on end, never to be turned off. No matter if we’re talking print or online, the energy, the time and thought that people put into media output is probably even bigger. That’s why this special issue’s dedicated to all these people, especially all them photographers, who’ve driven countless kilometres, who’ve spent hours and hours standing on electricity boxes or crouched underneath some rails, and who’ve contributed their energy-, time- and thought-filled work to the mag over the past 13 years. You might call it a „best of”, you might call it something else, I’d call it upcycling. Each and every single one of the following 300+ pages is dear to our hearts, and hopefully this special issue’s life expectancy will be a long one. Bringing this one to life in the first place has taken forever already and trying to include everything that’s dear to our hearts – if we had managed to do so, we would have upcycled something bigger than the bible -, has been a game we could not possibly win. So, if you have ever contributed anything to the mag, and even if you do not find it on these pages again, rest assured, your work’s appreciated till this day, and I still see every single photo that we’ve ever published in my mind’s eye.
